- President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjiv Khanna on November 11, 2024. Justice Khanna succeeds Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who retired on November 10, 2024, and his term will last until May 13, 2025.
- Justice Khanna, known for his role in key Supreme Court rulings, including striking down the electoral bonds scheme and endorsing the revocation of Article 370, will serve a brief tenure, concluding on March 13, 2025.
- A graduate of Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre, he enrolled as an advocate in 1983 and primarily practised before the Delhi High Court. Before his elevation as judge of Delhi High Court in June 2005, he served as Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department and was also the standing counsel on civil matters for the Delhi government. The Centre officially notified Justice Khanna’s appointment on October 24, following Chief Justice Chandrachud’s recommendation.
